Subject: Novel coronavirus (2019-nCoV)

The purpose of this circular is to provide information and guidance, based on recommendations made by the World Health Organization (WHO) and the United Nations Division of Healthcare Management and Occupational Safety and Health (DHMOSH), on the precautions to be taken to minimize risks to delegates attending meetings held at the International Maritime Organization (IMO), following the recent outbreak of the novel coronavirus (2019-nCoV).

Background

On 31 December 2019, WHO was alerted to several cases of pneumonia in Wuhan City (China’s Hubei Province). Subsequently, on 7 January 2020, the Chinese authorities confirmed that they had identified a new virus in the coronavirus family which includes the common cold and diseases such as SARS and MERS.

Recommendations for delegates and travelers

Travelers are advised to be aware of local health advice and to respect screening measures implemented by authorities in the countries of destination. All staff members should, before and during travel, contact the embassy, consulate or ministry of health of the country of destination, keep informed of local health advice and respect all screening measures imposed by local authorities.

If any delegate or staff member feels unwell while on the IMO premises, they can contact the Health and Wellbeing Services, located on the back wing of the 5th floor (extension 4012), for any immediate assistance they may require.
