    Profile Requirements and Functions
    Entry Profile: Law on Marinas and Connected Activities (LMAC) Chapter II

    Article 264. Applicants for the title of Second-Class Skipper and Second-Class Motorman must have completed their studies at an Institute of Diversified Secondary and Professional Nautical Education, duly registered with the National Institute of Aquatic Spaces, as well as having completed supervised navigation practice for a period of no less than nine (9) months, be over twenty-one (21) years of age, have at least completed sixth grade, and prove a minimum of twenty-four (24) months of sea service time.

    Article 267. Applicants for the title of Second-Class Motorman must possess the title of Middle Technical Level of the Diversified and Professional Level, and prove having served at sea in this specialty for a period of at least twelve (12) months.

    Entry Profile: Law on Marinas and Connected Activities (LMAC) Chapter II Article 280 numeral 6. Second-Class Motorman: to serve as Chief Engineer on vessels propelled by machinery with a power output not exceeding seven hundred and fifty horsepower (750 HP) and navigating within the area comprised between 7º and 13.30° North latitude and 60° and 72° West longitude, with the exception of passenger vessels navigating outside internal waters, and to act as an engine room watchkeeping officer on vessels navigating within the designated area.
    Subject Knowledge, Understanding, and Proficiency (Approved Content) Competence
    Marine Engines I
    • Operating theory of engines.
    • Duty cycles of two-stroke and four-stroke engines.
    • Comparison of duty cycles between rotary and reciprocating engines.
    • Description of internal combustion engine components and comparison with other machinery (Advantages and Disadvantages).
    • Concepts of Indicated Power, Effective Power.
    • Ignition of internal combustion engines and description of the injection system.
    • Outboard motors: structural characteristics, maintenance of the ignition and the lower unit, maintenance according to manual.
    • Fault detection. Maintenance according to manual.
    • Reduction gearbox and marine reversing gear. Operating principles, maintenance according to manual.
    Know the principle of operation, monitoring, and maintenance of marine engines, fault detection, and measures to prevent breakdowns; perform preventative and corrective maintenance on marine diesel engines.
    Mechanical Technical Drawing
    • Instruments: use and application.
    • Nautical mechanical symbology.
    • Scales.
    • Plotting
    • Sketches: freehand drawing (rough sketches).
    • Measurement and accuracy.
    Be capable of reading and interpreting blueprints and equipment diagrams, and preparing simple sketches of parts or components.
    Auxiliary Machinery I
    • Auxiliary systems: lubrication, fuel, cooling system, compressed air, preventative and corrective maintenance.
    • Domestic-use systems: potable water, fresh water, sewage and its treatment, maintenance and operation.
    • Bilge and ballast system, including bilge separator, maintenance and operation.
    • Steering system, reversing mechanism, maintenance and operation.
    • Operation and maintenance of the central firefighting system.
    • Lifting equipment (davits and cranes), maintenance and testing.
    Know the principles of operation, monitoring, performance evaluation, and maintenance of auxiliary systems.
    Refrigeration
    • Refrigeration cycle and its components.
    • Structure and operation of compressors: hermetic, semi-hermetic, and open.
    • Structure and operation of condensers, including purging of non-condensable gases.
    • Expansion valve: manual expansion valves and thermostatic expansion valves.
    • Evaporators: coil and forced-draft, liquid chillers.
    • Protection devices: pressure switch and thermostat.
    • Accessories: oil separator, sight glass, valves, solenoid, among others.
    Know the refrigeration cycle and its components, fault detection, and maintenance.
    Electricity I
    • Ohm’s Law.
    • Shipboard electrical and electronic systems: reading of blueprints and diagrams. Conductibility and insulation.
    • Fault detection in generators: vibrations, winding resistance.
    • Paralleling of dynamos, direct current, precautions.
    • Maintenance of split-phase motors and three-phase squirrel-cage motors.
    • Alternating current: frequency, phases, synchroscope, paralleling of alternators, conditions for the same.
    Supervise and verify the operation of the different shipboard electrical, electronic, and control circuits.
    Mechanics and Hydromechanics
    • Concepts of mechanics: weight-force, space, time, work, power, inertia, speed, resistance.
    • Energy: types, motion, momentum, centrifugal force, critical speed, balance, torque, units and their conversions.
    • Basic mechanisms: levers, types and problem-solving, resistance of beams, stress on pipes and shafts.
    • Fluid properties: Archimedes’ principle.
    • Relative equilibrium of fluids: Venturi tube, syphon.
    • Piping.
    • Hydraulic actuators: directional, pressure, and flow controls.
    • Hydraulic pump. Accessories, pressure gauge, flowmeters.
    Know the basic conceptual elements of mechanics and hydromechanics and their application on board.
    Damage Control
    • Repair, shoring, and damage control methods.
    • Success factors in carrying out a damage control action.
    • Damage control plan.
    • Provisional plugging of water inlets.
    • Measures to be taken in case of machinery space flooding.
    • Basic IMO Model Courses.
    Know safe and effective maintenance and repair procedures.
    First Aid
    • Content of IMO Model Course 1.13 Medical first aid basic knowledge.
    • Assessment of victims’ needs and safety hazards.
    • Structure and functions of the human body.
    • Emergency measures: proper positioning, resuscitation techniques, control of hemorrhages, treatment of shock.
    • Measures in case of burns, scalds, and electrical accidents.
    • Rescue and transport of victims.
    • Improvisation of bandages and use of the first aid kit.
    • Medical assistance: application of medical guides and radio medical advice.
    Render first aid in case of accidents or illnesses on board.
    Maritime English I
    • Technical English: handles basic terminology of engine room systems.
    • Reading and interpretation of blueprints and manuals in the English language.
    Employ written and spoken English.
