    • Knowledge and operation of portable radio equipment for survival craft and Emergency Position Indicating Radio Beacons (EPIRB): This is a type of emergency distress beacon, a portable battery-powered radio transmitter used in emergencies to locate aircraft, vessels, and persons in distress and in need of immediate rescue. In the event of an emergency, such as a ship sinking or an aircraft accident, the transmitter is activated and begins transmitting a continuous radio signal, which is used by search and rescue teams to quickly locate the emergency and render aid. The signal is detected by satellites operated by an international rescue services consortium, COSPAS-SARSAT, which can detect emergency beacons anywhere on Earth transmitting on the 406 MHz COSPAS distress frequency. The consortium calculates the position of the beacon and quickly passes the information to the corresponding local first responder organization, which carries out the search and rescue.
