Within the framework of the 11th Session of the Sub-Committee on Human Element, Training and Watchkeeping of the International Maritime Organization (IMO), the National Institute of Aquatic Spaces (INEA) stated its position in favor of updating the training of seafarers in the fishing sector and adapting it to the requirements of the current international Conventions and Codes in the maritime area (HTW 13 and HTW 14).

The entry into force of the 1995 STCW-F Convention and the new STCW-F Code, scheduled for January 1, 2026, requires the Sub-Committee to prioritize the revision of model courses 7.05, 7.07, 7.06, and 1.33, to ensure they are aligned with the new requirements,” stated the Director of International and Inter-institutional Relations of INEA, CA Luis Mérida Galindo, during the meeting taking place in London.

He also emphasized that international cooperation in this field is essential to raise standards and promote greater safety in fishing operations worldwide; therefore, INEA encouraged Member States with experience in this type of operations to actively participate in the revision of these model courses, either as authors or as members of the review groups.

Finally, the Venezuelan Aquatic Authority reiterated Venezuela’s readiness to work together with the IMO and its member states to achieve the goals in this area.
